Being God's Reflection

[Written Especially for Children]

We all at some time have played with our shadows, and found them very unlike ourselves, and laughed merrily at their foolish shapes and sizes. A shadow is never exactly like the person or thing it is supposed to show to us, but always altered in one way or another. We shall find this to be true if we will stand with our backs to the sun and look at our shadows cast on the ground in front of us. Or let us try making shadow-pictures with our hands on the walls of a lighted room, and we may see images of people and birds and beasts.

A reflection in a perfect mirror is always exactly like the person or thing it reflects. One can prove this to be true by standing in front of a good, clean mirror and seeing the exact image of himself reflected there; or by looking into a clear, still pool of water, and finding there an exact picture of the trees and clouds and sky. When we understand the meaning of shadow and reflection which Christian Science teaches, we shall find it easier to be happy and good and healthy all the time.

In Christian Science we learn that error is shadow. On page 418 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy calls the errors of sin and sickness "waking dream-shadows" and "dark images of mortal thought." Those errors, too, which are called unhappiness, discontent, naughtiness, fretfulness, and fear, are only shadows. Just as the shadow of one's self on the ground does not tell the truth about one's size and shape and color, so these shadows of error do not tell the truth about our real selves as God's children.
