Untrammeled Progress
After the children of Israel had gained their freedom from Pharaoh, whom they had considered their sole taskmaster, it developed that many enslaving thought conditions within themselves had to be corrected ere they could enter the promised land. The Pharaohs of material belief, such as fear, ingratitude, injustice, idolatry, jealousy, and sensuality, to which the Israelites yielded obedience, enslaved and detained them in the wilderness forty years. They were not prepared to meet the enemies in the land of Canaan until they had combated and conquered the enemies within their own consciousness. This done, the river Jordan opened before them and the walls of Jericho fell.
The exodus prefigures the experiences of those of the present day who are making their way out of the Egyptian darkness of materialism and ignorance of God toward the consciousness of spiritual reality and harmony, as revealed by Christian Science. Many turn to the study of the textbook written by Mrs. Eddy, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," only because they can find no other means of release from bondage to sin and sickness, to discord and discouragement, to limitation and lack. The greatest desire of those enslaved by so-called incurable disease, it seems, is to be healed of their physical disabilities, for sickness is indeed a discouraging and hard taskmaster. Christian Science, the divine law of liberty and harmony, breaks the bonds of sin, disease, and discord, thereby proving the illegitimacy of such enslavement. Thus Christian Science reveals and points the way to the promised land of pure peace, unalloyed joy, abundant good, providence, and perfection—spiritual consciousness.
Some, after gaining the sense of health, seem temporarily content therewith. Most of the beneficiaries of Christian Science, however, wisely choose to strive for additional blessings, for spiritual understanding whereby they can solve all their problems and prove man's heritage of complete freedom and dominion. To this end they have the practical explanation furnished by Christian Science of the instruction and example of Chrsit Jesus, the Way-shower. During his three years' public ministry the Master marked the way for all mankind to overcome sin, sickness, and death, and coincidently he was working out his own salvation from all material and limiting beliefs. His spiritual development and demonstration were undelayed because his thought was untrammeled by conflicting motives and desires. Thus Christ Jesus overcame every phase of material belief, and ascended into the realm of spiritual consciousness.
