On page 324 of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health, we read these words: "Gladness to leave the false landmarks and joy to see them disappear,—this disposition helps to precipitate the ultimate harmony." I should like to testify to the truth of these words and also to express my gratitude for them.
For twenty years previous to taking up the study of Christian Science I was a pharmacist and a student of pathology. I was also an X-ray operator, and assisted in the designing of tubes for the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Overwhelmed by discouragement, despair, self-pity, and a great sense of injustice, which impaired my activities, I turned to Christian Science over sixteen years ago. At this time I separated myself from medical associates and friends, taking a position in a boarding school. Here I had considerable free time, and studied very earnestly the Lesson-Sermons as given in the Christian Science Quarterly. I also devoted as much time as possible to the study of Science and Health, together with the Bible.
As there was no Christian Science church or society in the community, I was unable to attend any Sunday services or any Wednesday evening testimony meetings; nor did I know of a single Christian Scientist there whom I could consult. I did not even know the procedure of a Christian Science treatment. Before the end of the school year, however, I found that I could lay aside a very uncomfortable body brace which I had been compelled to wear for over twenty-five years for the relief of a severe hernia. I was also healed of periodic spells of extreme nervous exhaustion during that first year of study. These healings, for which I am deeply grateful, came through the daily reading of the Lesson-Sermons. By realizing somewhat the allness of God, good, and never looking for ill effects of certain conditions and so-called laws, I have learned to turn to God as my protector. Twice I have been spared the ordeal of vaccination in foreign lands.
