When Christian Science was first brought to my notice...
When Christian Science was first brought to my notice through the healing of my mother I was nineteen. I needed no special physical healing at that time, but after it began to dawn on me that Science is the truth, then fear, sensitiveness, lack of self-confidence, and limitations of all kinds were gradually overcome. A quick temper was eradicated with the realization of the truth of these words from Psalms: "Be still, and know that I am God."
The overcoming of fatigue was one of my first healings. On coming from work one day, completely tired out, I found that there was supper to prepare at once. However, I sat down for a moment, opened Science and Health, and found this message on page 217: "The scientific and permanent remedy for fatigue is to learn the power of Mind over the body or any illusion of physical weariness, and so destroy this illusion, for matter cannot be weary and heavy-laden." I got up, prepared the meal, and was on my feet continually until bedtime, with no feeling of fatiguw whatever.
Later, in normal school, while playing basket ball, I sprained my thumb quite severely. Immediately I began declaring to myself "the scientific statement of being," as found on page 468 of Science and Health. On reaching my room I turned to these words on page 393: "Be firm in your understanding that the divine Mind governs, and that in Science man reflects God's government. Have no fear that matter can ache, swell, and be inflamed as the result of a law of any kind, when it is self-evident that matter can have no pain nor inflammation." I memorized this sentence, and repeated it to myself during supper. Soon the thumb was perfectly normal in size and shape.
