My father was a physician, and from childhood I was interested in his efforts to heal the sick. I remember my reluctance, even as a small child, to believe that nothing more could be done for a sick person. I was also unwilling to accept the teaching of the church I attended that the soul of the person who died in sin went to a place of torment, from which it could never escape. No doubt my early reasoning on these questions prepared my thought for the immediate acceptance of Christian Science when it was presented to me at an early age through the healing of a relative in another state; and since that time three of my sisters and one brother have accepted the teachings of Christian Science. I am certain that the coming of this Science into my life was in answer to my longing to know God; and the remarkable way in which my need for growth in the understanding of this teaching has been met is a convincing proof of God's care.
When I first heard of Christian Science I was living with my father in a small town in Ohio, many miles from any Christian Science activity. A little later an aunt, who had come into Christian Science through the healing of her husband, came to visit us, and when she returned to her home a copy of Science and Health was sent to one sister who was in need of healing for chronic ear trouble. Although she is now a Christian Scientist, she was not prepared to receive it then, and did not devote much time to the textbook. However, I felt ready for it, and when in trouble of any sort I took the book to a quiet room and read it. I did not understand much that I read, but I was always uplifted and greatly helped by study. Then an invitation came to spend six weeks with Christian Scientists in another city; and while there I availed myself of every opportunity to learn more about Christian Science. I went home with boundless faith, and when confronted with sickness of any sort, instead of asking my father for medical aid, I relied entirely upon Christian Science for help, and it always met my need.
About a year later arrangements were unexpectedly made for me to live in Buffalo. I attended the Christian Science Sunday School and availed myself of all the activities of the church. I was so occupied with gaining understanding that I did not pay much attention to the change which Christian Science was making in my personal appearance. Someone who knew me slightly was so impressed with the greater degree of health I was manifesting that he told me about it in a very emphatic way two or three times.
