In your issue of April 14 there is the report of a sermon by a clergyman in which his views on Christian Science are set forth. Many who are now Christian Scientists formerly held similar views, and persisted in them. Later they abandoned these erroneous concepts, and have been able to prove to their entire satisfaction that the teachings of Christian Science are identical with those of Christ Jesus.

The first Tenet of Christian Science, given on page 497 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, reads as follows: "As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life."

The Christian Science textbook fulfills its purpose in making spiritual truths clear and understandable, and many people have been healed of organic and other diseases simply through reading its pages. Far from being "strange" and "incomprehensible," it is written with wonderful lucidity of expression. It has enabled hundreds of thousands of people to understand the spiritual significance of the Scriptures and to make the Bible their daily companion.

Our critic says, "It is impossible to say what Mrs. Eddy's teaching on Christ is." On the contrary, it is perfectly clear. Briefly, in accordance with the teaching of our Master, a distinction is drawn between the human Jesus born of the virgin mother, and his spiritual selfhood, the Christ, which is the manifestation of God. Mrs. Eddy defines God as "incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love" (Science and Health, p. 465); and on page 583 of the same work she defines "Christ" as "the divine manifestation of God, which comes to the flesh to destroy incarnate error." The New Testament records how fully the Christ was manifested by the incomparable man, Jesus.

Our critic states that "Mrs. Eddy denies the existence of evil ... and then stumbles on to explain that evil is matter." If our critic will accept the spiritual definition of God, and His omnipotence, omniscience, and omnipresence; if he will then try to think as Christ Jesus thought, in other words, have that Mind "which was also in Christ Jesus," he will find that just in proportion as he does so he will first learn the way in which evil claims to operate, and will then perceive that it is nothing but a lie, as our Master said.
