Now is the Time

The weekly Lesson-Sermons read in Christian Science churches contain many valuable Bible promises of God's loving care and provision for all; and in the light of Christian Science these promises are made practical. A host of grateful beneficiaries testify to this fact in the Wednesday meetings in Christian Science churches throughout the world.

Jesus said, "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing." And in a passage on page 254 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy says: "The human self must be evangelized. This task God demands us to accept lovingly to-day, and to abandon so fast as practical the material, and to work out the spiritual which determines the outward and actual." These two statements comprise a wonderful measuring rod for the student of Christian Science with which to find just where he stands mentally.

In an emergency a Christian Scientist proved that indeed the flesh has nothing to do with "the spiritual which determines the outward and actual." The announcement came to her one day, in the place where she was employed, that she was to be transferred to another department, her duties having to be taken up the same afternoon. The student thanked God for this greater opportunity to serve, but while being instructed in her new duties she found that only a right-handed person could do the work; and owing to an accident she had been left-handed since early childhood. Disappointment was expressed by members of the office force when they saw her predicament, and the head of the department was plainly disturbed. A great wave of fear and discouragement came over the student, and for a moment it looked as if her high hopes would be shattered. But like a flash of light came to her thought the forceful declaration that man is complete and perfect, irrespective of any outward sign. With this instant glimpse of the status of the real man, fear vanished and she was sustained throughout the remaining working hours.
