It is gratifying that the writer of a letter in your issue of June 8 expressed agreement with Christian Science on the fact that there is one creator, God, but it is to be regretted that he misunderstood the final phrase of Mrs. Eddy's statement, "Spiritually to understand that there is but one creator, God, unfolds all creation, confirms the Scriptures, brings the sweet assurance of no parting, no pain, and of man deathless and perfect and eternal" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 69).

This indicates that the words quoted are to be understood "spiritually." To do so is to know that the "one creator, God," is infinite, omnipotent Spirit, and that the man of God's creating is a different creature from the unrighteous, troubled sinner mentioned by your correspondent. In the statement quoted above, the author discusses the real man, the spiritual man, who, according to the Bible, is made in the image and likeness of God; while the contributor's citations relate to the mortal or carnal man—the counterfeit of God's man. In other words, the contributor's selections deal with a material concept or what is called "the natural man" in Paul's statement, "But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neigher can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned."

The Bible is a practical book. It emphasizes the permanency, harmony, and success of the spiritually-minded, and points out the weakness, discord, and failure of the carnally-minded. The grand lessons of the Bible can be made useful by differentiating between spirituality and carnality—by adopting the former and rejecting the latter, or, in the words of Paul, but putting off "the old man" and by putting on "the new man."
