The Ballad of Mary Magdalene

I saw him first in the market place
With a child against his knee,
And when he said, "Forbid them not,"
I thought he looked at me.

Ah! Magdalene, he knew thee well;
No sin from him could hide;
For shame thou should'st have turned and left.
She said: I had no pride.

One needs must follow a gentle voice
And tender words like these,
When the heart is drear as the gray, gray boughs
That hang on the olive trees.
