My wife experienced her first healing in Christian Science about three weeks before our marriage. She told me about it, but it made no impression on me. I believed all Christian religions were foolish, because I thought I knew all there was to religion, having been educated to become a rabbi.

About six months after we were married, physicians gave my wife two months to live because of Bright's disease. She turned to Christian Science for help. The practitioner told her that she would have to study, and she asked me to read with her. We read the Lesson-Sermons from the Christian Science Quarterly together. I read the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, as I did not think I should find accounts of Jesus so frequently in it; my wife read the Bible texts. I did this only to help my wife, as I felt that if this did not heal her I should lose her. I assured myself and her that I would not let any of this touch me, for I was an orthodox Jew and wished to remain one. She did not urge me, since she wanted me to do as I saw best. Her religion and mine had always differed, as she is not Jewish. We read every night, and in a very short time my wife was completely healed.

My work at that time was most inharmonious, and the anxiety was tremendous. After studying with my wife I noticed that some of the thoughts obtained in reading the Lesson would come to me during the day and that many of the fears and doubts were disappearing. I began to see that Christian Science was true and demonstrable. I saw that it did not take away anything usable or good from my thoughts about God, but gave me the real understanding of Him; I must give up only the superfluous baggage of ritualism and prejudice and false theology. I then took up the study in earnest. I have not had cause to glance back since that time. Very soon after this step, I was able to leave that position and go to another, where the work was most harmonious and I was able to express through it something of the good I was learning. Increased supply also manifested itself.
