When I came to Christian Science I had been an almost helpless invalid for years, and my eyes were in such a condition that I had been shut up in a dark room for fifteen months. The case was pronounced hopeless. During all this dreary time I held firmly to the conviction that, since God is absolute good and all-powerful, there was surely a cure for me, and this I diligently sought. Every material remedy available was tried. At that period occurred some notable faith healings, and during the two years preceding my appeal to Christian Science I depended entirely on prayer; yet throughout this trial of my faith I sank steadily, until the end seemed imminent.

But regardless of all disappointments, the recorded healings of sin and sickness by the prophets of old and by Jesus and his disciples towered like mountain peaks above the hilltops of intellectual skepticism. Marvels seemed the natural manifestations of God's love and care for mankind, as I pondered on the omnipotence and perfection of the creator. But what is evil? was my query. Finally, one day, I said to my mother: "I think I see what evil is—man's failure to reach good. Everyone is striving for something he thinks is good: the thief by stealing, the dishonest man by cheating, even the assassin believes he will accomplish some good for himself by taking the life of his fellow man."

The Scriptures were vainly searched for a practical understanding of that healing power which would bring into demonstration the assurance of the master Metaphysician, "And these signs shall follow them that believe; ... they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." My conclusion of the whole matter was that in the sacred pages lay an interpretation which, if understood and applied, would heal the sick and sinful in any age and that this would yet be discerned. I knew that devout ministers of the gospel were predicting the coming of a higher, more spiritual Christianity, from whence they knew not. But the fact was it had already come into human consciousness through the spiritual perception of Mary Baker Eddy.
