[Original testimony in German]

I feel urged to testify publicly through these pages to the physical and moral healings I have been privileged to experience in Christian Science, and to the complete change this religion has brought into my life. My father, who was a hotel proprietor, a notorious drinker and man of the world, taught his children at the early age of five to drink cider, wine, beer, and at family gatherings even champagne. At the age of fifteen I was a heavy drinker, and at twenty-eight I was such a complete victim to this appetite that during the day, from eight o'clock in the morning to midnight and often later, I would drink between twenty and twenty-four quarts of various kinds of alcohol. My physical condition was so shattered that in the morning I was not able to write my name legibly unless I had drunk a quart or more of wine. I kept this up for six years, then through will-power I forced myself to drink only about ten to twelve quarts a day, and kept this up for about twelve years.
Then, while climbing, I met with an accident, injuring my right arm badly. A bone protruded about four inches, and very soon the whole arm became inflamed. One of my wife's friends told us about Christian Science and I wrote to a Christian Science practitioner. In a little over a week I was healed. Not long afterwards I had a severe attack of lumbago, from which I had suffered two or three times every year, and which, lasting three to five weeks, had always confined me to my bed with terrible pain. I was healed completely in one absent treatment, and in the years following have had no more pain whatever. The lumbago had completely disappeared.
I then began to read the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and all the other authorized Christian Science literature in the German language with great enthusiasm. Gradually the quantity of alcohol I consumed daily diminished. In spite of my love and reverence for Christian Science, I did not wish to give up drinking, however, and I opposed all the arguments of truth. I insisted that alcohol was necessary for the body. But at the same time I clung to Christian Science, with profound gratitude and an earnest desire to understand more of its teaching.
