Advancing Spiritually

In the experience of every Christian Scientist there often comes a longing to reflect more of good, to think more spiritually. It is well on these occasions to ponder what is true spirituality.

The attaining to true spiritual thinking can be likened to climbing a mountain. Suppose several climbers decide to scale a certain peak. They might set off at different times upon their quest. Some might be off early, and be a long way on the ascent before others had risen from their slumbers. Some might be quick in climbing, some slow.

A climber, seeing someone above him on the march, might wish that he himself were as far on the way, or even that he were at the summit. Another might even give up the attempt. But the faithful continue! Up, up they climb, steadily, joyfully, or perhaps at times haltingly; but ever they keep to the trail. Those below see the leading climbers and long to reach the point to which they have attained, each hoping to advance, and all moving upward towards the summit. It would be unjust to assume that the climbers in front were better mountaineers than those coming steadily on from behind. It would be wrong to think that the former had had any special privileges, or had found an easier route.
