Post-Gazette
When critics declare that Mrs. Eddy, known as the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, "stole her ideas," as alleged by a book reviewer in your issue of December 13, the following facts will amply refute the charge:
From childhood Mrs. Eddy was a devout student of the Bible and believed in it throughly. She was engaged in reading the Bible when a remarkable recovery occurred from the effects of a serious injury occasioned by a fall. Thus assured of the presence of spiritual substance and convinced of the power of Truth to heal, she searched the Scriptures with renewed zeal, and found the spiritual law underlying all spiritual healing.
The Bible, spiritually interpreted, is itself the best evidence of the origin of Christian Science. At the time of Mrs. Eddy's discovery there was no other such interpretation of the Scriptures known as she gave. It is true that spiritual truth has been uttered by inspired men from time immemorial, but no statement of spiritual law such as Mrs. Eddy has given existed.
