In your issue of the 14th, the Bishop of Gloucester is reported to have spoken of Christian Science as "that curious and persistent phenomenon of the present time," and of "recourse only to prayer" for the purpose of healing as "one of the worst heresies ... of the present time." It is further stated that "it was not true that a man could be cured apart from medical science."

Though Christian Scientists have a great respect for the self-sacrificing lives of the majority of medical practitioners, they are seeking to follow in the footsteps of Christ Jesus, who healed by spiritual means alone, and who commanded his followers to do likewise, saying, "By their fruits ye shall know them."

Many instances might be given, showing that the opinions expressed by the bishop are not universally shared, but the following will, no doubt, suffice: Dr. Drummond Shiels, member of the British Parliament, said, "Some of the most remarkable cases I know of, wonderful cures, have been in connection with Christian Science, which I have seen myself and know;" also, quoting Dr. Charles Hunter, Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine in the University of Manitoba, "Christian Science has helped many persons suffering from diseases, which to the medical practitioner, had defied diagnosis."
