The Spiritual Basis of Being

The Bible abounds in revolutionary statements of truth, that is, revolutionary to a world which believes in many minds and many theories. But when these statements are studied in the light of Christian Science, the seeker for Truth discovers to his great joy that the Bible and Christian Science are in entire agreement, and, furthermore, that there is healing in the Word of God.

"God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth," said Jesus; and John wrote, "God is love." In Jeremiah it is written: "I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. . . . And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart." Do not these passages sustain the revelation of Christian Science, that God is Spirit, Truth, Love, Mind? And since man is the image of God, is it possible that man can be both spiritual and material?

When the student of Christian Science accepts the spiritual basis of being, in which all true consciousness is the reflection of God, good, he is accepting the truth of all real existence. But this does not mean that thereby he is miraculously transformed into a celestial creature — far from it. It simply means that he has accepted the spiritual basis by means of which he is to prove his sonship with God. The important thing to realize is that he has to prove this perfect relationship to God; and it is the proving that seems to cause all the struggle in the student's experience. There are times of triumph, when the great love of God for His creation is demonstrated spontaneously; but there are also times of apparent failure to realize immediately the glorious truth. On such occasions the student sometimes falters, doubts, and even questions the truth.
