In an article in your esteemed paper of June 12 I find a reference to Christian Science which evidently is based upon a lack of knowledge of this religion, and I therefore ask space for the following information.

Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, never said that her writings were of more value than the Bible. On the contrary, she always maintained that her teachings are wholly built upon the Bible, and she always speaks of it with the greatest reverence. On page 547 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" she writes: "The Scriptures are very sacred. Our aim must be to have them understood spiritually, for only by this understanding can truth be gained." It is this deeper, spiritual meaning of the Bible which is referred to in the Gospel of Luke, where it is written, "Then opened he [Jesus] their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures." The early Christians undoubtedly had the understanding which among other things enabled them to heal the sick and raise the dead, as Jesus and the apostles did. About 300 A. D., the "signs following," which played such an important part in primitive Christianity, disappeared, and only in our day, owing to the discovery of Mary Baker Eddy, has this higher and more practical Christianity again made its entry among men, and in a form adapted to the age.

Anybody who without bias will study the books of Mrs. Eddy will find that Christian Science is not "an omnium gatherum of words and sentences and contradictions," but a clear and logical Science, which may be proved in proportion as it is understood. It is also Christian, because it is in full accordance with the pure teachings of Christ Jesus; and it bears the same fruits, for it heals the sick and the sinful, and brings comfort to the sorrowful.
