It is with deepest gratitude for all that Christian Science has done for me that I testify to its healing and regenerating power. Some years before I had reached the age of thirty I was told by an eminent surgeon that I must reconcile myself to a life of semi-invalidism owing to an internal trouble. As I had been through an operation to gain relief from this condition, the report of the surgeon came as a great shock to me, and resulted in a severe nervous breakdown. Then followed two years of intense mental and physical suffering. Until this crisis in my life I had always had a firm faith in God and a love for the Bible, especially for the Gospels recording the life of Jesus, his great love for mankind, and his wonderful works of healing; but now I began to question things and to ask myself whether Jesus could do all these mighty works, even raising people from the dead. I even began to wonder whether these records were true, and if, after all, there could be a God. The effect of all this querying, allied to my suffering, was to plunge me into a night without a star. I told no one of my doubts, but kept very quiet during these trying days.

Very shortly after this my husband and I went on a visit to friends, and there I met a Christian Scientist who aroused my interest in the subject, as I realized that she had a God who was a fixed Principle in her life. I determined to investigate the subject for myself, and from that moment my outlook on life began to change. Upon my return home I bought a copy of the textbook of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and while reading and studying this book I was instantaneously healed of the internal trouble and the many complications that had arisen from it. This healing took place twenty-one years ago, and there has never been the slightest recurrence of it.

Some years later I was healed instantanelusly of chronic heart trouble, with the help of a practitioner. Christian Science also proved a great blessing to me at the time of a great sorrow. This healing did not take place until I was able to see the truth of our dear Leader's words in her reference to the raising of Lazarus, where she says (Science and Health, p. 75): "Jesus restored Lazarus by the understanding that Lazarus had never died, not by an admission that his body had died and then lived again. Had Jesus believed that Lazarus had lived or died in his body, the Master would have stood on the same plane of belief as those who buried the body, and he could not have resuscitated it." When a friend drew my attention to this statement I was able to see clearly that in reality there could not be any separation because "all is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation" (ibid., p. 468), and I was completely healed of sorrow.
