A minister recently referred to Christian Science, as...
Morning Herald
A minister recently referred to Christian Science, as reported in your paper, in a manner to deceive your readers. He stated that Christian Science says, "There is no sin and hence no need of a Saviour." Christian Science does not teach that there is no sin in the world, but it does teach that there is no sin in God's creation or in spiritual reality. Instead of advocating a dishonest position in regard to sin, this Science is acting as a searchlight to uncover and destroy all forms of sin.
Not since the days of Christ Jesus has anyone gotten after sin so fearlessly as has Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. She has much to say about it. Among other things, she teaches that hatred, envy, jealousy, dishonesty, greed, or like sinful thinking, rather than some material cause, is frequently the basis of disease; that sin always brings suffering, and deserves to be punished until forsaken.
Christian Science, instead of teaching "no sin," lays bare the prevalence of sin in the world, and, instead of teaching "no need," teaches the extreme need for a Saviour; and, best of all, it does not stop there, but provides the means of salvation by furnishing a practicable understanding of the Christ, Truth, as taught and demonstrated by Jesus. On page 150 of her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy says: "The mission of Christian Science now, as in the time of its earlier demonstration, is not primarily one of physical healing. Now, as the, signs and wonders are wrought in the metaphysical healing of physical disease; but these signs are only to demonstrate its divine origin,—to attest the reality of the higher mission of the Christ-power to take away the sins of the world."
