Blackwell Evening News

In reporting last Sunday's sermons, the minister of one of your local churches is reported to have said, "If you want to get rich quick, start some religious fad like . . . or Christian Science, and you will amass millions in a few years." This statement, if left uncorrected, might lead your readers to believe two propositions: first, that Christian Science is a religious fad; and, secondly, that it is a get-rich-quick scheme to amass millions in a few years.

Neither of these propositions is correct. Christian Science was discovered by Mary Baker Eddy in 1866. The first edition of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the Christian Science textbook, was published in 1875. Since that time the Christian Science movement has encircled the globe and its adherents are counted by the million. This religion has been tried and tested for over fifty years and is growing more rapidly to-day than it ever has in the past. No system of religion based upon a fad could have withstood the criticism and ridicule that have been hurled at Christian Science by those who sought to destroy it or prevent its growth. Christian Science stands firmly upon the doctrine given to us by Christ Jesus, which is contained in that wonderful statement made by him when he asked which was the greatest commandment of all: "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets."

The last thing Mrs. Eddy thought of in establishing the Christian Science church was "money making." It is true that she was successful, and when she passed on she left a substantial estate; but beyond certain bequests to her immediate relatives, her entire was left to advance the Cause of Christian Science throughout the world.
