For over ten years I have studied Christian Science and...
For over ten years I have studied Christian Science and have conscientiously and consistently applied its practical teachings to every problem in my daily life. I have been blessed and benefited in countless ways by this study. When I first turned reluctantly to Christian Science for physical healing, I used to go to the Wednesday evening testimony meetings to hear of the healings. Some of them, as given by those healed, seemed remarkable and miraculous, as I had thought some diseases were incurable. Several times when the testimonies were about a healing from what I considered a hopeless physical condition, the healed one would end by saying, "While being very grateful for this healing, I am more grateful for the spiritual uplift that I have experienced." At that point I would mentally say, "If I could only get healed and be well, I don't care a bit about spiritual uplift." However, that was just the lesson I had to learn; and as I tried to purify thought and empty it of false beliefs—of sickness, sin, disease, and the fear of death—I found myself well.
Intestinal trouble, severe colds, sore throat, quick temper, have all yielded to "the alchemy of Spirit," as Mrs. Eddy says in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 422): "As when an acid and alkali meet and bring out a third quality, so mental and moral chemistry changes the material base of thought, giving more spirituality to consciousness and causing it to depend less on material evidence. These changes which go on in mortal mind serve to reconstruct the body. Thus Christian Science, by the alchemy of Spirit, destroys sin and death."
I shall always feel grateful to the practitioner who labored so sincerely and lovingly with all my doubts and fears and tears, and always pointed the way for me to take the steps myself, to study the Bible together with the Christian Science textbook and all the other writings of the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science.
