When Christian Science was brought to my notice thirteen...

When Christian Science was brought to my notice thirteen years ago, I did not at first readily grasp its teachings because I read the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, in an argumentative mental attitude. As this gave way to an earnest seeking for the truth, I was convinced that Christian Science is the pure Christianity which Christ jesus taught and practiced, bringing to us the right understanding of God and of man made in His image and likeness. I learned that God's law of love and harmony—the only real law—is ceaselessly operating on our behalf, so that day by day we can live in the expectation of good.

I have had many proofs through physical healings, and through the solving of seemingly difficult problems—sometimes with the help of kind practitioners, sometimes by my own realization of the truth—of the efficacy of Christian Science. I should like to mention three healings which stand out very clearly in my thought. The first was that of a distressing cough. I feared to go to the church services or to the Wednesday evening testimony meetings, because of sudden attacks of suffocation. This discordant condition was quickly overcome through the work of a practitioner. The second healing was of acute bronchitis. A practitioner came repeatedly to me and gave me loving help and advice. I was very ill and, in those early days of study, knew very little about Christian Science. The discordant condition seemed persistent for about ten days; then one evening I was suddenly quite well. There was no sense of weakness, no period of convalescence—the shadow had completely vanished. It was severe winter weather, with snow, frost, and a keen wind; but I went out next morning and every succeeding day of the week without any bad effect.

A third and later healing, for which I am profoundly grateful, was of deafness. I had loving and efficient help for some time, until I felt that I ought to go on working by myself. At intervals error again tried to assert itself, but I held to the truth, to the fact that "all is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation" (Science and Health, p. 468),—therefore perfect,—and before long the weight suddenly lifted, and I was free. Christian Science has also been and still is a great help to me in overcoming faults of disposition, including a quick temper, and other traits of mortal mind. I cannot express my gratitude in words; my desire is to prove it in daily life.—(Miss) Marie C. E. Rabus, Birkenhead, Cheshire, England.
