Earnest Study

SCIENCE is an exact and systematic statement or classification of knowledge concerning a certain subject. This knowledge must be acquired and verified by exact observation, correct thinking, and close and careful study. Observation will prove of little help without study; and in order to study intelligently one must follow the instructions of a teacher duly qualified to instruct a student in the particular subject in which he desires to become proficient; and in order to progress in his study, one must provide himself with authentic textbooks.

When one desires to seek membership in The Mother Church, he finds the By-Law on page 34 of the Manual of The Mother Church which reads, in part: "The BIBLE, together with SCIENCE AND HEALTH and other works by Mrs. Eddy, shall be his only textbooks for self-instruction in Christian Science, and for teaching and practising metaphysical healing." And in the "Explanatory Note" on page 4 of the Christian Science Quarterly we are told that "the Bible and the Christian Science textbook are our only preachers."

As its name implies, Christian Science is strictly scientific. Differing, however, from material science, so called, it is based on the divine Principle, Truth. Every so-called material science is a seeming mystery until investigated. To some not versed in civil engineering, the meeting of two crews of men in the center of a mountain while boring a tunnel from opposite directions, might be considered chance or a coincidence. The astronomer, the mariner, the architect, all work methodically, while the layman looks on in surprise and wonderment.
