A report of the lecture by a doctor purporting to be on Christian Science, appearing in your issue of the 7th inst., contains some accusations against its teachings. I therefore politely ask insertion of the following, which may serve to correct the wrong impression produced.

We all start with "believing." But in order to endure, belief must through confirmation in daily practice grow into conviction and so into knowing, in the sense meant by Jesus when he said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." This "knowing" Christian Science imparts, showing its followers how to put into practice Jesus' teachings, including the precepts which he gave for healing the sick.

Science, in contradistinction with mere material knowledge, is that which rests upon true premises and is demonstrable. According to Christian Science there is one First Cause, God. Christ Jesus defines God as "perfect"; and as such God is unchangeable, "with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning." Now, only the unchangeable can furnish true Science. So, God is not only knowable, but the only really knowable Being.
