Signs of the Times

[An editorial in the Cherry City News, San Leandro, California. Reprinted by request from the Christian Science Sentinel, July 21, 1928]

Nobody in the world of surgery is better known or more respected than the Mayo brothers, who maintain the famous clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. One of them was lecturing before a representative body of physicians the other day. He called their attention to the fact that often when materia medica and surgery fail, purely mental treatment succeeds. He urged them to watch the work of the Christian Scientists. Coming from an old school medical man, this advice is significant. Many of us in our arrogant pride refuse to investigate the other fellow's point of view. We ... remain blind to a revolutionary method of treatment that has performed miracles. Here is something interesting: figures compiled by impartial investigators show that during the influenza epidemic years ago, the Christian Scientists headed the list with cures per number of cases. This is not a proselytizing editorial for Christian Science. We merely point out the fact that we can ill afford to scoff at a method of treatment that has restored thousands to health and happiness.
