Harmony or Discord?

Throughout the Bible musical terms are frequently used to typify harmonious states of consciousness. The faithful followers of God are urged to employ song and instruments of music in praise of God, as, for instance, in the thirty-third psalm: "Praise the Lord with harp: sing unto him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings. Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise."

The army of Israel went out against the enemy preceded by those who sang of God's greatness and power. David soothed the troubled spirit of King Saul with his playing. The sounding of the trumpets day after day was part of the campaign against Jericho. The instances in which the people made "a joyful noise unto the Lord" might be enumerated indefinitely, but those cited will serve to illustrate.

The writers of the Scriptures realized that unity of thought, like-mindedness, was necessary to produce that harmony of action so needful to attain success in any undertaking. Most people realize the sense of musical rhythm and harmony in some degree, hence the symbolic use of such terms is readily comprehensible.
