God's Good Gifts

Two passages of New Testament Scripture very beautifully set forth the truth that God is the Giver of all good. James writes, "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning;" and Paul in his second epistle to Timothy says, "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." And in thus speaking of God as the One "from whom all blessings flow," the two apostles express what every Christian would acknowledge.

Now it were well that Christians—followers of Christ Jesus—should be clear as to what is meant by saying that God is the Giver of "every good gift and every perfect gift," and clear also on the meaning of "good gift." Here is where Christian Science comes in with its profound, yet simple, teaching. And what does Christian Science teach about God in this regard? That He is infinite Mind, infinite good. Thus does one learn of the great spiritual truth that God is characterized by infinite intelligence, which manifests itself in infinite goodness. Besides, Christian Science clearly reveals that God's creation, spiritual man, is the idea or reflection of Himself; hence that man, the real man, must reflect infinite good.

Always does Christian Science in its teaching go straight to the very core of spiritual being. It lingers not at all in the byways of matter, so called; for, declaring the allness of Spirit, it testifies to the unreality of matter. And because Christian Science takes its students into the "secret place of the most High," it is the Comforter, the very Comforter promised by Christ Jesus, revealing the most sacred truths ever imparted to the consciousness of men. That God is infinite good is one of these truths; and that He has already bestowed all good on man, His creation, is another. Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the Christian Science textbook (p. 2), "God is not moved by the breath of praise to do more than He has already done, nor can the infinite do less than bestow all good, since He is unchanging wisdom and Love."
