I am writing this testimony with a feeling of intense gratitude for all that Christian Science has done and is increasingly doing for me, not only by healing all manner of false beliefs, expressed in many diseases, but also by proving that in practical everyday life one can be governed and shown how and when to carry on, if only one strives to obey the laws of this God-given truth.

For about thirty years I had suffered from what many doctors had diagnosed as chronic rheumatoid arthritis, which first showed itself in the joints when I was only nine years of age. It was generally regarded as inherited, as my father had been a martyr to gout. I was then being educated at a private school at Harrogate, and was ordered by a doctor to take a course of baths and to drink sulphur water, and continued this treatment until leaving for another school. From that time medicines of every description, and cures of many forms, both in this country and abroad, were tried; but nothing alleviated the trouble for more than a short period. At last, having been told by a specialist that nothing more could be done, and also that the complaint would probably become worse as I grew older, I was advised to try Christian Science.

I knew nothing about this form of healing, and had absolutely no faith in its efficacy, but was ready to try anything on the chance of obtaining help. A practitioner very kindly undertook to treat me, if I on my part would undertake to read and try to understand "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. For about six months I felt no better, and alternated between indifference and extreme irritation, with all the old symptoms constantly recurring. However, at last, signs of improvement began to appear, and after about a year's almost continual treatment my health in every way had enormously improved. After some further periods of treatment I was completely cured.
