There have recently appeared in the Constitution several references to a speaker now appearing at the Baptist Tabernacle Bible conference here, and to his past connection with Christian Science. When reporting his address, "Why I left Christian Science," your valued paper quoted this speaker as saying "that it was doubtful if the claims of Christian Scientists for curative powers were correct." In this connection, on behalf of Christian Scientists and for the benefit of your readers, the following statement is offered for your kind acceptance: According to the speaker's own statement in his sermon, his doubt that Christian Science heals was based on the word of an individual who claimed to have been a Christian Scientist for fifteen years, but who had not during that long period healed one case of sickness. From this testimony the doctor concluded that there must be a "screw loose" somewhere in Christian Science. Apparently it has not yet occurred to our critic that the loose screw may have been located in the individual's lack of adherence to the rules laid down in the practice of metaphysical healing in Christian Science. It is recorded that even Jesus' disciples once failed to heal because of insufficient faith in and understanding of God's power to cure a case of lunacy. And Jesus rebuked them because of this.

Evidences that Christian Science heals disease are so numerous that even those most skeptical must encounter at times, unless they purposely turn a deaf ear, the expressions of gratitude for the healing efficacy of Christian Science, testified to by hundreds of thousands of Christian Scientists, and also by many who have not openly embraced our religion. The speaker questions Mrs. Eddy's interpretation of the Scriptures. Such doubt might alos be expressed of any Christian's elucidation of the Bible. However, for the present some doubt would be mitigated by designating as nearest right that interpretation of Holy Writ whose teachings best instill the doing of Jesus' works, as he commanded, along with preaching of the Word. As of old, the fruit still distinguishes the tree.
