About three years ago I was called back to my former home, where there were no students of Christian Science, and was detained several days. The time was largely spent in conversation about sickness, suffering, and death as inevitable. Suddenly I overtaken with a difficulty which manifested itself on my right thigh, as if I had been bitten by something poisonous, though I was not conscious that such a thing had happened. This developed rapidly, my thigh becoming much inflamed and swollen, with a dark blue place in the center. I seemed unable to rest that night, sleeping only for short periods, and was finally awakened with a chill.
Realizing I had not faithfully discharged my duty of guarding my thought closely, I saw the poisoned condition as error. For the first time since taking up the study of Christian Science I realized that "only through radical reliance on Truth healing power be realized" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 167). I have been grateful many times for this opportunity, which enabled me to listen for God's voice. By applying the truth as we are taught in Christian Science, I was able to hear the words, "Be still, and know that I am God"—and immediately I realized peace. When morning came and I began to dress, I found my entire body inflamed. Again I resolutely turned to God for guidance, and these healing words of our Leader came to me (ibid., p. 480): "Where the spirit of God is, and there is no place where God is not, evil becomes nothing,—the opposite of the something of Spirit." I remained in the home three days longer. When I reached my own home, my family insisted that a Christian Science practitioner be called, and in a short time after this request was made the difficulty disappeared. With this healing came the realization that, as our Leader says (ibid., p. 174), "Truth is revealed. It needs only to be practised."
Words fail to express my gratitude to our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, for the unfoldment of the Bible through the study of Christian Science, and for the loving practitioners to whom we can turn in times of need and be helped to find freedom and peace. I am also grateful for membership in The Mother Church and a branch church, and for all the blessings that have come to me through Christian Science.
