The correspondent whose letter appeared in a recent issue...

Ohio State Journal

The correspondent whose letter appeared in a recent issue of your paper, headed "Methods of Healing," showed a pronounced ignorance of Christian Science when he designated it as a "mind cure," and grouped it with faith-cures at shrines, and with hypnotism and spiritism or spiritualism. First, let it be said that Christian Science is not a "mind cure," if by the term is meant a system of healing, or cure, based upon the action of the so-called human mind. It is quite clear that this is what the correspondent referred to, because he stated that Christian Science holds "mind" to be the only real thing in existence. Now this is just what Christian Science does not do. In speaking about various books on mental healing which have plagiarized "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the textbook of this religion, its author, Mary Baker Eddy, has said on page x of the Preface, "They regard the human mind as a healing agent, whereas this mind is not a factor in the Principle of Christian Science." On page 174 of this same book is the statement, "We should understand that the cause of disease obtains in the mortal human mind, and its cure comes from the immortal divine Mind." It is this divine Mind, or God, and the spiritual man and spiritual universe of His creating, which constitute all reality, according to Christian Science teaching; and it is the so-called mortal mind, or "carnal mind" as Paul characterized it, which comprises all error or unreality.

Christian Science holds that disease is a false image of mortal mind, which is to be destroyed by the correct understanding of God and man; and that as this is done, our bodies will evidence the qualities of God (or good) in harmony or health. On page 210 of Science and Health we read: "Knowing that Soul and its attributes were forever manifested through man, the Master healed the sick, gave sight to the blind, hearing to the deaf, feet to the lame, thus bringing to light the scientific action of the divine Mind on human minds and bodies and giving a better understanding of Soul and salvation. Jesus healed sickness and sin by one and the same metaphysical process."

As for the statement made by your correspondent that Christian Science is an absurdity, allow me to suggest to your readers that they judge for themselves the truth or falsity of this assertion by submitting it to the test given us by the Master, when he said, "Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them." On this basis Christian Science will hold its ground against any mere superficial or immature judgment, as thousands upon thousands of those throughout the world who have been regenerated, healed, and blessed by the touch of Christ, through the teachings and practice of this great religion, will testify.
