For some time before coming into Christian Science I...
For some time before coming into Christian Science I had made several attempts to give up smoking, but without success; so, on the very day that I took up the study of Christian Science, I thought I would put its healing power to the test by using it. I am grateful to say that the desire to smoke left me then and there, as completely as did the last puff of smoke, and I have not had the slightest desire to smoke since. I am also extremely grateful to acknowledge the wonderful healing power of Christian Science in the overcoming of severe and frequent headaches, as well as of grippe and bad colds.
Since taking up the study of this great religion I have solved a great many problems through the understanding which I have gained.
When in childhood, and long before becoming interested in Christian Science, it was the custom at the Sunday school in which I was a student for the scholars to come prepared to recite an appropriate selection from the Bible; and as with most other small boys, the meaning of the quotation was not so important as its brevity, so my selections were genrally such as "God is love," and, "Love one another." There was one little three-word verse that was a favorite with some of us. It reads, "Pray without ceasing." Although it was short and easy to remember, it always bothered me; for I could not understand it. It remained for Mrs. Eddy to clear this up. She tells us in our wonderful textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 4), "The habitual struggle to be always good is unceasing prayer." How well this explains how to pray without ceasing! And we are taught that, regardless of what the difficulty is from which we pray for relief, as we become better—more Godlike—the problem is we are assured that to pray in this manner does not detract from our daily work, but is a help to us.
