With sincere gratitude for the inspiration and illumination...

With sincere gratitude for the inspiration and illumination gained so often through the testimonies of healing at our Wednesday evening meetings and in our periodicals, I desire to bear witness to the healing power of Truth.

My own healing in Christian Science occurred nineteen or twenty years ago, when I was lifted from a chronic condition of invalidism, the result of nervous prostration, to a state of permanent good health. My healing came through the faithful work of a practitioner, before I knew anything of the teachings of Christian Science. With the healing came a great desire to learn something of what had brought to me a sense of vigor, vitality, hope, and courage to which I had long been a stranger. So I borrowed a copy of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and began the reading of it. Soon the borrowed copy was replaced by one of my own.

As the daughter of an Episcopal clergyman, I had always been familiar with the letter of the Bible. But when, as a young girl, I faced a heavy trial, and turned to my Bible for consolation, I failed to find the comfort I was seeking. When, soon after I left school, my health broke down completely, it did not even occur to me to look to the Word of God for help, but seven years were spent in a vain search for health through material means. When, however, Science and Health interpreted the Bible for me, the promises with which I had been familiar, but which were practically a dead letter to me, became illumined, until I could prove the truth of the statement on page 98 of our textbook that "mystery does not enshroud Christ's teachings, and they are not theoretical and fragmentary, but practical and complete; and being practical and complete, they are not deprived of their essential vitality."
