In January of 1897 our mother passed away

In January of 1897 our mother passed away. My sister and I were heartbroken. Several of our friends were looking into Christian Science. One of these friends said to me, "If you will come over to see me, I think I can help you." So I went every day for about two weeks, and I began to understand that there is no separation in Love.

Later I decided to go to a practitioner for help for my eyes. I turned to Christian Science for physical help, not for the religion; but I finally said to my sister, "I believe I will go to the Christian Science service on Easter Sunday." When I had decided, the peace "which passeth all understanding" came over me. On the following Sunday morning I met a friend on the train who had been healed in Christian Science, and we went together to the service.

Although I was not an invalid, I spent much time in bed with inflammatory rheumatism, diphtheritic sore throat, sick headaches, and bilious attacks, although the bilious attacks were growing less, because in 1884 I had taken absent treatments in Christian Science and was healed during one night, and was able to attend to my work the next day. Since coming into Christian Science I have not been sick in bed a day for over twenty-seven years. For many years I arouse at five o'clock in the morning to study the Lesson-Sermon. Although I have been through deep waters many times, the waters have never passed over my head, and there never has been a thought of turning from Christian Science. I have proved many times that there is no sensation in matter. Oh, the joy of knowing the omnipresence of God! Sometimes I feel like shouting from the housetop.
