A correspondent of your paper, using the signature, "A True Disciple of Christ," says of heaven, "There is no sin there, no hospitals—no cemeteries, no sickness," and then he objects to what he calls "man-made theories like Christian(?) Science, et cetera." He also gives his definition of the word "Christian." Most professed followers of Christ will agree that the Master is the best authority on the subject of Christianity and heaven. They will also agree that Jesus not only preached the truth regarding God and man, but supported his preaching by works of peculiar and distinctive character. They know the Master said: "My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself." Now Jesus did his works in obedience to God and, in order that his true followers might be unmistakably distinguished, said, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall be do also." The Master defined Christianity by works, and Christian Scientists are today repeating those peculiar works, in proportion to their understanding. Those healed by Christian Science know that the change wrought in them could have been accomplished only by divine power; and they spiritually understand that this religion is not a man-made doctrine. Even Christ Jesus was accused of healing by a power other than Spirit, God.
Christian Scientists are in hearty accord with your contributor in understanding that sin, disease, and death are unknown in heaven, which they understand to be the only true existence, in which God is correctly understood and obeyed. The Saviour said, "The kingdom of God is within you." When commanding his disciples, or true followers, to perform the healing works which he did, Jesus told them to preach that "the kingdom of heaven is at hand." On this point the difference between Christian Scientists and our critic appears to be that he does not understand how healing by the spirit of Truth and Love, as the Master did, brings heaven into our experience now, in proportion to our response to divine Spirit or Mind.
