Edinburgh and Leith Observer
In a sermon reported in your issue of recent date, a clergyman said that Christian Science "is not Christian, nor yet is there any science about it." Christian Science is Christian because it is based wholly on the teaching of Christ Jesus. It is Science because when understood it can be demonstrated. In other words, it is demonstrable truth. Jesus said, "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free"—free, of course, from the bondage of sickness and sin, the things which Jesus was daily destroying.
Continuing, the preacher affirmed that Christian Science approaches a man and says to him, "There is no sin, no sickness, nothing but imagination." But on page 460 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy writes: "Sickness is neither imaginary nor unreal,—that is, to the frightened, false sense of the patient. Sicnkess is more than fancy; it is solid conviction." The reverend gentleman continues, "and multitudes go groveling at the feet of an old woman from America." Groveling! No; this American lady taught her followers to repudiate entirely the worship of human personality. Old! Well, this American lady was in her ninetieth year when she passed on; but since when has age been a crime in the eyes of Christians? Woman! Yes, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science was a woman: but it is surely rather late in the day to decry any work on the basis of sex. America! Yes, this lady was an American. "Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth?"
Lastly, the gentleman refers to the case of a child who passed on while receiving Christian Science treatment. His criticism of this case would hold water if he could prove that there would not have been the same result had medical assistance been called in. Everybody knows, however, that doctors cannot guarantee cures. As a matter of fact, children's cases are constantly being successfully treated by Christian Science practitioners after they have been declared to be hopeless by the doctors.
