I have long wished to express my gratitude through...
I have long wished to express my gratitude through the columns of the Christian Science Sentinel for the many blessings which have come to my family and to me since taking up the study of this most wonderful religion.
Christian Science was suggested to me by a kind and loving neighbor nearly eight years ago, when our little boy, who was then a tiny infant, seemed to be suffering from malnutrition. I had so much confidence in materia medica in those days that I thought if we were to take our baby from the physician's care we would surely lose him. Weeks and months passed, with the baby growing thinner and more delicate. Several physicians were consulted, and every formula and baby food heard of was tried, but with no result. When he reached the age of seven months he weighed one pound less than at birth, and to mortal sense was a pitiful sight. At this time he seemed stricken with a raging fever and bowel trouble in its worst form. As usual the physician was summoned. Upon his arrival, he looked the child over and said not to disturb him by giving more medicine, as he did not need it now. That was one instance when actions spoke louder than words; and I knew upon his departure that he did not think our baby would last much longer.
Man's extremity, however, was God's opportunity. I was now ready to turn unreservedly to God for help. I telephoned for the loving neighbor who had been so patient with me. When she came in and saw the seeming condition she told me that God would make my baby well. She urged me to leave the child with her, and to go into another room and try to rest and calm myself. After a few minutes I returned to her and found the baby sleeping peacefully and with normal temperature. My husband and I then decided to call a practitioner to take up work for the child. The improvement was remarkable, and in two weeks our baby was perfectly and permanently healed, thus proving that mortal laws are not real and can have no power over God's ideas; for we had been told that even though the child got well he would never be strong.
