Christian Science is not solely a system of healing but is a Christian religion. Its teachings are to be found in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," written by the Discoverer and Founder of this religion, Mary Baker Eddy. The aim of this teaching is to lead mankind back to primitive Christianity as taught and proved through practice by Christ Jesus. To the assertions set forth by a clergyman—according to the newspaper report—I should like to reply: The growth of Christian Science was not checked during the war in Germany; on the contrary, its teaching has steadily unfolded. The account of the life of the Founder of this religion is taken from hostile writings, whose sole aim is to degrade Mrs. Eddy. Earnest church historians have come to other conclusions and opinions. To characterize Christian Scientists as "faith healers" or "thought healers" is erroneous and misleading, because other people and denominations who strive to heal by faith are characterized in the same manner. The statement that Christian Science knows nothing of prayer is also erroneous. The first chapter of the above-mentioned book is devoted to prayer, and this chapter shows that this religion has a very holy and earnest concept of prayer. In accordance with Jesus' teaching in Matthew 6:33, Christian Science objects to prayer for personal advantages. The statement that Christian Science does not acknowledge Jesus' work of redemption is refuted by the second chapter of the textbook and also by the tenets of Christian Science. The statement that its healing method is based on suggestion is not correct. The fourth and fifth chapters of the textbook show that Christian Science strongly disapproves of every activity of the so-called human will. A Christian Scientist knows that he, personally, is not the healer, but that it is the eternally operating Christ, Truth, which heals all manner of sickness and sin.
