Opportunity

The teachings of Christian Science clarify many misconceptions. Take the usual interpretation of opportunity as an illustration. The common belief is that opportunity is a will-o'-the-wisp, here perhaps only once, to be made one's own if snatched on the instant, but never again available. Instead of this view, Christian Science takes opportunity out of the realm of chance, and brings it within the practical grasp of every one.

The word "opportunity" has a Latin derivation having the literal meaning, "at or before the port." Among its dictionary definitions is, "A time or place favorable for executing a purpose." The Christian Scientist knows that he is always "at or before the port" of thought, and that the "time favorable for the execution of a purpose" is now.

From the viewpoint of the Christian Scientist, then, what is his opportunity? His great opportunity is to enter into conscious relationship to God. This is his divine privilege, his priceless blessing, his perfect protection; and Christian Science points the way.
