"A sound mind"

Paul's great message to Timothy, "God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind," states unmistakably the falsity of fear, and expresses the truth of God's bestowal of love, strength, and spiritual understanding. In bestowing upon His image and likeness, man, the full gift of spiritual reflection, God has endowed man with all of good. Thus, God's image is forever safeguarded from any possible contamination with so-called evil. Since all good is eternally omnipresent, all good gifts are also omnipresent; and it is God's will that these should be enjoyed in perpetuity.

Mortals are putting up with all sorts of legacies which do not legitimately belong to any one; and they are consenting to be deprived of divine blessings which God, the one creator, is bestowing without stint or variation on all His spiritual creation. These blessings, however, are not to be found in matter. For instance, with regard to the education and spiritual direction of children, divine Mind, God, in whom is no unsoundness, alone is a safe guide and guard. Parents, however, have been known to consult phrenology, palmistry, and physiology in their endeavor rightly to cultivate the health, talents, constitution, and development of their offspring. How misleading, how contrary to the wise command of God, divine Love, as voiced through the prophet Isaiah: "Ask me of things to come concerning my sons, and concerning the work of my hands command ye me"! Only from this pure and perfect source shall we discern each one's true, God-created individuality and boundless, flawless heritage of health and holiness, intelligence, joy, and loving-kindness. So-called mortal mind seeks to deprive one of these ever available gifts, but Christian Science reveals the perfect naturalness of all good, and the naturalness of its attainment when sought through the reflection of God's perfection. Indeed, nothing is truly and divinely natural except harmony and perfection, both of which are now and forever sustained by divine Mind's beneficent laws.

A dictionary defines "soundness" thus: "Free from flaw, defect, or decay; not impaired; trustworthy; founded on truth or right, as 'a sound thinker.'" The student of Christian Science endeavors to test the soundness of his thoughts by asking himself whether God, Truth, is conscious of them, whether they are Love-inspired, whether they lead Godward. He is learning to love his heritage of "a sound mind," and to be alert in claiming it, defending it, healing by it. Christian Science reveals that the divine Mind, God, is the only real Mind, and that this Mind contains not one single thought or belief of sickness, sin, or fear, matter or mortality. All is radiant, pure, spiritual; and every idea of Mind is a blessed expression of immortal harmony. All of God's gifts, all of His thoughts, are perfect and unchanging. Cause and effect being interrelated, God could not withdraw His gifts; for to do so would entail His own self-destruction. Hence, all of God's gifts are being expressed in full measure; and it is only the evidence of false material sense which seems to conceal, but can never reverse, this great scientific fact.
