[Written for the Sentinel]

Confidence in God

I do not know just why the sun
Sends forth its rays through countless years;
Yet through its constancy I feel
A lessening of doubts and fears.

I cannot see the hand that swings
The universe in perfect rhythm;
But to this great, unchanging power
My confidence and trust are given.

I do not know just how the earth
Renews her loveliness in spring;
But as the new, soft leaves appear
Death fails with its dark threatening.

And so I walk, and trust my God;
Nor falter as the years unfold.
His certain hand will strengthen me;
His wisdom will refine the gold.
