Daily News
In the December 12 issue of the News a clergyman is reported to have said that Christian Science denies the fundamental truths of God's Word; that if Christian Scientists had charge of this country there would be no hospitals, no vaccination for smallpox, no antitoxin for diphtheria, no inoculation for typhoid fever; that Christian Science has never converted one outstanding Bible scholar in the world; that one should watch out for any religious system that starts with a woman; that the New Testament suffers not a woman to teach; that God does not reveal to any woman truths that have been hitherto unrevealed; that Mrs. Eddy taught that there is no such thing as sin; that she believed the only devil there is is a lie!
If the speaker had said Christian Scientists do not entertain the same view as other Christians regarding all the Bible fundamentals, he would have made no mistake. These are some of the questions looked upon as fundamental in Bible teaching: God (His nature and character); the Christ; Jesus; man; the atonement; evil; et cetera. Christian Science is in agreement with all the fundamental teachings of the Scriptures; the God the Bible reveals is the Christian Science God. This God is good; He is "of purer eyes than to behold evil," and cannot "look on iniquity;" with this God there is "no variableness, neither shadow of turning;" this God is omnipresent; He is omnipotent, the only creator. Christian Science is in harmony with the Bible teaching concerning Jesus and the Christ; it is in accord with the atonement of the Bible. Christian Science sees man as God sees him, in His (God's) own image; Christian Science deals with evil according to the Scriptural teaching, "Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good." Christian Science does not elaborate any Bible question theoretically; all that it teaches is demonstrable, and applies to the present time.
It is true that Christian Scientists would not maintain hospitals as they are now maintained and conducted by medical authorities; however, homes for the sick and helpless would be provided by the Christian Scientists, even as they are now in many places. A model institution of this sort, under Christian Science management, has been open near Boston, Massachusetts, for a number of years. It is true, also, that under the Christian Science thought there would be no vaccination for smallpox, as now practiced by the medical world, and no antitoxin for diphtheria, or inoculation for typhoid fever. Christian Scientists prefer to follow the spiritual teaching of the Bible for health and longevity, rather than the prescriptions of so-called modern medical science. The Scripture, spiritually understood and applied, is the Christian Scientist's refuge from fear of disease, as well as from all other forms of evil. It might be added that Christian Scientists believe in and comply with all right sanitary regulations; they indorse fully and unreservedly the sentiment expressed in the adage that "cleanliness is next to godliness."
