In 1900 I was suffering from a nervous and physical collapse, supposed to be the result of overwork in an unhealthy climate, which caused anxiety and discouragement. Among my friends were counted several eminent surgeons in whose work I was at that time interested, but they could do nothing for me. The last specialist who examined me kindly and frankly declared there had not been discovered any cure for the particular malady with which I was afflicted. The outlook was indeed dark; I did not know which way to turn, and was giving up my days to tears and worry.

Just at this point a friend advised me to read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. This was rather against my inclination, for I had heard Christian Science ridiculed,—the jests of thoughtless people were all I had ever heard of it. However, with the gentle insistence of my friend, I concluded it could do me no harm at least to examine the book. From the moment I read the first page I perceived that here was not only relief from thoughts of the body and disease, but a promise to solve all the problems of human existence; and my interest and determination to familiarize myself with its teachings were constant. Many hours of every day were devoted to reading and study. As a result, I found myself transformed from a hopeless state of threatened invalidism to sound health and happiness.

As the years went on my freedom increased, and consciousness attained in a degree the perception of God's perfect creation. Class instruction, membership in The Mother Church and a branch church, followed as normal processes, until the activities of the Christian Science movement fully occupied my time and thought.
