Enlarging Our Borders

Students of Christian Science, without exception, are deeply impressed with Mrs. Eddy's extraordinary breadth of vision. Recognizing mankind's urgent need for salvation, she was convinced that, since it is the manifestation of the Christ, Truth, her discovery—Christian Science—is the only remedial and regenerative agency whereby universal salvation may be won. Accordingly, she saw the necessity for carrying the healing message ultimately to all humanity, everywhere, throughout the length and breadth of the earth. Of the universal application of spiritual truth, Mrs. Eddy declares in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 252): "Christian Science is not only the acme of Science but the crown of Christianity. It is universal. It appeals to man as man; to the whole and not to a portion; to man physically, as well as spiritually, and to all mankind."

Thus does our Leader set forth both the individual and the universal need for the truth which heals and regenerates. Mrs. Eddy's viewpoint was in perfect accord with the vision, the teaching, and the practice of Christ Jesus. In those precious days between the resurrection and his final ascension, Jesus admonished his followers, "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature,"—"every creature," or "all creation" as many commentators translate the passage, meaning all mankind; and surely this injunction, so precisely expressed, was directed to all the faithful who throughout subsequent ages should receive Christ, Truth, and partake of its blessings.

Mrs. Eddy, with characteristic humility and obedience, and with wisdom nothing less than divine, prepared to carry out the Master's injunction in its spirit and letter. To "preach the gospel to every creature" she instituted The Mother Church, which should eventually encompass the whole earth with its branches, and the numerous and varied activities designed to spread abroad the gospel of glad tidings to every part of the world, to the most remote and sparsely settled portions, as well as to the great metropolises,—wherever thought should be ready to receive the true evangel.
