A critic, in a recent issue of your paper, has clearly shown that modern science proves matter to be energy — not a so-called solid substance. The Bible says, "Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment;" and it further defines faith, the desired attainment of professing Christians, to be "the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." In the Preface (p. vii) to the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy writes as follows: "The time for thinkers has come. Truth, independent of doctrines and time-honored systems, knocks at the portal of humanity." One will find from this textbook of the Science of Christianity — Christian Science — that all unreal material phenomena are the illusion of "the carnal mind," "the wisdom of this world," which "is enmity against God" and "foolishness with God;" that the truth that sets us free from the sin, sickness, and death of this unreal existence is the fact that "God is incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth. Love" (Science and Health, p. 465); and that man, made in His image and likeness, is thus spiritual and eternal, not material. "God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth," is quite apart from, and the opposite of, any effort to do so through the carnal mind's so-called material phenomena.
