A careful investigation of the teachings of Christian Science, as set forth in its authorized textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, will reveal to any honest seeker that Christian Science is in perfect accord with the Bible teachings relative to the virgin birth of Jesus, the atonement, the inspiration of the Scriptures, and the divinity of the Christ. It would therefore seem that Christian Science may rightfully claim that its origin is divine. However, Christian Scientists are not content to base their right to the name of Christian on the passive acceptance of a creed or doctrine, because the Bible plainly tells us that Christ Jesus demanded much more. The concluding verses in the gospel according to Mark contain an account of his last conversation with his disciples, in which he impressed upon them the necessity of "confirming the word with signs following," in these words: "And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." That the apostles fully realized what it meant to call themselves followers of the Christ, we have ample proof; and it was the healing works performed by them which attracted multitudes to the early Christian church. The Apostle James, in his epistle "to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad," warned them against reliance on doctrines and creeds in these words: "What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? . . . Shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. . . . For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also."
