In March, 1917, while I was operating a ripsaw, a hardwood...

In March, 1917, while I was operating a ripsaw, a hardwood splinter struck me in the right eye, cutting the eyeball across the pupil. I was rushed to the hospital, where several stitches were taken to close the wound. The next morning the physicians (one of them an eye specialist) informed me and the members of my family that I would be blind in the injured eye for life, and would be extremely lucky if I did not lose the other on account of infection; also that nothing could be done for the injured eye except to save the eyeball, as the vision had been entirely destroyed at the time of the accident. The best hope held out for me was a scarred eyeball and no vision.

Help was asked for in Christian Science from a practitioner, and treatment was started for me at eleven forty-five in the morning. At one thirty in the afternoon, I could see light around the edges of the bandage. I was working under the Workmen's Compensation Act, and was required to stay in the hospital for two days after calling for Christian Science help. I then went to my home, discarded the bandages, and never used them again. The light did not bother me; nor was it necessary for me to use colored glasses. I suffered no pain or discomfort after asking for Christian Science help. I was examined for the insurance company in a few days, and my eyesight was pronounced perfect. There was no scar left on the eyeball. This was over six years ago, and my eyes are perfectly normal, never giving me any trouble, although I read a great deal.

During the influenza epidemic I was healed of a severe attack through the work of a practitioner; and many other demonstrations have been made in my family. I am indeed grateful to God and to Christian Science for the faithful and loving help which has never failed us in our times of need. Knowing nothing of Christian Science until the healing of my eye, I am like the blind man who said, "One thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see."
