Among the Churches

Current Notes

Sioux City, Ia. (First Church).—Faithful worshipers made possible the new Christian Science church which was recently dedicated. The construction of the new edifice was started August 28, 1921, and the last bill paid on November 8, 1922. The address, in part, was as follows:—

This branch church was organized on February 22, 1891, with twenty-four members. Up to the present date, it has accomplished much in healing the sick, saving the sinner, and preparing those who learn and live the teaching of Christian Science to do the same. ... This address is based on the profound fact expressed in a few words,—God is All, and man is His reflection. Moreover, the true idea of Mind is the Christ. As Christian Scientists we believe, yes, more, we understand, that Christ is divine, being the divine idea of God; that the life of Christ Jesus was in fulfillment of prophecy; that he so understood true idea of God as to prove the nothingness of all unlike good, and that he overcame sin, sickness, and death by destroying "the works of the devil." By this process he proved the Christ to be the only begotten Son of God, and urged that all go and do likewise. He said, "If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me." His rule is practical now. We can deny all suggestions to believe that which is not true, and declare that God is all and governs all. Christian Science, understood, enables one to have the Mind that was in Christ Jesus. Building on this foundation, the loyal ones in this vicinity, true to the truth as taught by Moses, by Jesus, and by Mary Baker Eddy in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" and her other writings have, as a result, this church, which silently stands here, expressive of what can be and is being accomplished by faithful adherence to the teachings of Christian Science. Therefore, to God and to His Christ we to-day dedicate this church,—not its foundation, walls, and roof merely, but also our hearts and lives we dedicate to the Mind that was in Christ Jesus. We of this branch church seek to let our light so shine that men may see our good works and turn here to seek healing, peace, and understanding, thus aiding in bringing peace on the earth and goodwill among men.—Sioux City Tribune.

A correction was made in the January 27, 1923 Sentinel: In the column "Among the Churches" in the Sentinel of January 20, page 412, the statement, taken from a local newspaper, that First Church of Christ, Scientist, at Sioux City, Iowa, was out of debt when dedicated, it has since been learned, is incorrect. Attention is called to the custom founded upon a definite statement from Mrs. Eddy, and generally adopted by the field, of dedicating a Christian Science church edifice only when it is fully paid for.
