[Written for the Sentinel]

Unawares

Into my heart an angel came one day,
And found me strangely startled, unawares.
I gave no heed, until it seemed to say:
"I came in answer to your fervent prayers."

Oh, welcome guest! How oft my soul had cried,
That out of error's dark and hideous dream
An angel, like to thee, should be my guide
Into a land where Love should reign supreme.

And since thy coming, all my doubts and fears
Have vanished into native nothingness;*
And Christian Science wipes away my tears,
And, with a peace divine, my soul doth bless.

O Love divine! all other love excelling,
O Comforter of promise! Thou hast come:
Thy blessed truth, my every thought compelling,
Shall lead me to my longed-for rest,—my home.
