In the year 1898, when I decided to take class instruction...
In the year 1898, when I decided to take class instruction in Christian Science, in view of the fact that the class was to be held some distance from my home city, and that this meant absence from my field of labor, I immediately wrote to the president of my company for two weeks' leave of absence, and received by way of reply the statement that my presence was absolutely necessary at that season of the year. I at once replied that it was necessary for me to be away for the time, and that I was very sure business would not suffer during my absence. So-called mortal mind was trying to make me fear for my position; and the question of supply seemed quite in evidence. Right then and there I had to know absolutely that all supply comes from God, and that no loss could come to me from absolute obedience to the call of Truth. Permit me to say here, that I returned to my work, which had suffered no loss in the brief interval, but, rather, had improved.
It was while en route to the second evening's meeting of the class that I was struck by a street car, and thrown on to the stone pavement. A crowd gathered around, but I assured them regarding myself, and sat on the steps of a vacant store to do my mental work. Immediately, the words of our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, as found in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 424), came to me: "Accidents are unknown to God, or immortal Mind." I knew also that God alone was the source of strength and activity, and that nothing could deprive me of the good in store. Very soon the acute pain disappeared, and I was able to get to a car. On reaching the home of my teacher I briefly stated the episode and asked for help, and was able to sit through the lesson; in fact, I attended every session. On reaching my room after the accident, I found that one bone of the leg below the knee had a slight fracture; however, I suffered comparatively little, and walked with only a slight limp. No one knew of the situation except my teacher and his wife. At the boarding house all were strangers; consequently, no questions were asked. In about three weeks I could walk without any evidence of injury.
I feel impelled to give this testimony of healing in Christian Science in response to the frequent inquiry, "Well, what would you do in case of a broken bone?" Christian Science proved that with God nothing shall be impossible.
